Sam Byram says he wants to play regularly next season as his Leeds United contract enters its final month. The 32-year-old is one of four permanent squad players out of contract at the end of next month, the other three are goalkeepers.
“Yeah, I think get the job done here. You know, I'm confident that, you know, we'll see that out. And then for me, you know, I still think I've got a few years ahead playing football.” He was speaking on the Official Leeds United podcast.
“I'd like to play regularly if I can. It's something off the back of before coming here, I had a lot of years on the sideline with injuries. So I think for me to get myself in a position where it's the best I've felt physically, I think that's something I really want to fulfil, play as much as I can.”
Byram returned in 2023 on a one-year deal with an appearance-triggered 12-month extension, then signed fresh terms last July. Under Daniel Farke across two Championship seasons he started 45 games in all competitions and made a further 30 substitute appearances.
Recruitment after promotion left him down the full-back pecking order. He played eight minutes off the bench at Arsenal in August and has not featured in the Premier League since, his only start a Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Sheffield Wednesday that month. Later came late FA Cup cameos against Derby County and Norwich City.
Leeds are expected to add again at full-back this summer, so a decision now looms for club and player. Byram suggested an exit could be possible if it brings the regular football he wants.
