Ryan Mason could be in line for a surprise move to Sampdoria, five months after his Albion dismissal.

La Repubblica reports that the former Tottenham midfielder and coach is the front runner for the club’s job after they finished 13th.

Mason made his first steps in management with the Baggies last summer. He started impressively, with Albion top after the opening few games, before form dipped.

He lasted 27 matches as the side slid into the bottom half. A rotten run away from home ended with a last-gasp defeat at Leicester, after which he was sacked.

Since then he has been loosely linked with the managerial vacancy at Watford. It is said Sampdoria chief executive Jesper Fredburg is driving the approach, with his Anderlecht ties seen as relevant.

It has also been suggested that the club have taken note of fellow second tier outfit Cesena appointing former England player Ashley Cole.
