Santis powers Guatemala to pivotal victory in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – The Final Round of the Concacaf Qualifiers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued with Guatemala securing a 1-nil win over El Salvador in Group A on Tuesday at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Nathan Ordaz had a good look in the 11’ to give the hosts the lead, but his left-footed shot from the left end of the box headed towards the bottom right corner was saved by Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.
Ronald Rodríguez came close to handing El Salvador the lead in the 31’, with a header from the center the box rattling the crossbar following a set piece delivery from Ordaz.
Guatemala pulled ahead early in the second half in the 46’, with Óscar Santis scoring the winner for Los Chapines with a hit to the bottom left corner from the right side of the box. Jesús López recorded the assist on the play.
Hagen had solid performance in goal for Guatemala, tallying one save as he kept his first clean sheet in the Final Round.
With the result, Guatemala improves to five points and is now third in Group A. El Salvador is fourth with three points.
Guatemala will host Panama when it resumes its qualifying campaign on November 13. El Salvador will visit Suriname on the same day.
