According to UOL, Santos have agreed an amicable contract termination with midfielder Tomás Rincón. The 38-year-old is not in the club’s plans and did not report back to CT Rei Pelé. He had a deal running to December and could already sign a pre-contract elsewhere, with the board now finalising the sums due.
Rincón had hoped to figure under coach Cuca, who had said the player asked for a chance and praised his experience. He has played only three times this year, against Red Bull Bragantino in the Paulistão and versus Cruzeiro and Bahia in the Brasileirão. His last minutes came in April.
Before the pause he trained normally, but the staff preferred Gustavo Henrique, João Schmidt and Willian Arão in the holding role. The hierarchy also promoted Samuel Pierri from the Sub-20. That reduced Rincón’s opportunities.
His exit frees up the number 8 shirt. He became a dressing-room leader after arriving in August 2023 and finished that year as a starter in midfield, scoring two goals across 16 Brasileirão rounds. He then lost ground during the Série B under Carille.
Born in San Cristobal, Venezuela, he began at Zamora and Deportivo Táchira, then moved to Hamburg. Spells in Italy followed with Genoa, Juventus, Torino and Sampdoria, before joining Santos. Capped by Venezuela since 2008, he is the country’s most-capped player and a leading figure.
