Santos have confirmed the termination of defender João Basso’s contract, bringing forward an agreement that was due to expire at the end of this year. According to Diario Do Peixe, the decision is expected to be published on the CBF’s BID. He was no longer part of the club’s plans.
This year he featured in the clássico against São Paulo at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão, his first Santos appearance after seven months without playing. His previous outing had been the 2-2 draw at Sport at Ilha do Retiro on 26 July last year.
He later came on against Athletico-PR, where a costly mistake preceded a late defeat. Under coach Vojvoda, he was effectively fifth choice behind Zé Ivaldo, Adonis Frías, Alexis Duarte and Luan Peres.
Last year he scored one goal across 15 appearances in competitive and friendly matches. After the Sport game he sustained a left adductor injury, missed a spell, then returned to squads but had yet to play under the Argentine coach. He was also central to a recent transfer ban, with the club required to pay Arouca in relation to his 2023 signing.
In 2024 he spent the first half of the year on loan at Estoril, playing 14 times. Back at Santos mid-year, he was reintegrated and featured in Serie B, scoring two goals in eight games. Basso came through Paraná before spells in Portugal with Estoril Praia, Real Sport Club and Arouca, prior to joining Santos.
