Santos have agreed to mutually terminate defender João Basso’s contract, confirmed on Tuesday morning.
Basso has featured only twice this season. Since 2023 he has played 36 games, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
The 29-year-old signed the termination by mutual agreement and the club wished him success for the next stage of his career.
In January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a FIFA ruling against Santos over debt from Basso’s transfer, completed in 2023 under Andrés Rueda. The club recently paid two point five six million euros, about R$15.3 million at current rates, to Arouca of Portugal to lift a FIFA transfer ban.
Santos are pushing ahead with a move for centre-back Lucas Veríssimo, a youth product who belongs to Al-Duhail and is playing for Al-Wakrah in Qatar. A three-year contract has been offered after a loan approach was rejected, with a bid in the region of four to five million dollars for 70% of his rights. There is optimism over a release given tensions in the region, and the club are racing to conclude a deal before Tuesday’s deadline for players arriving from abroad.
