Santos have been hit with a transfer ban, leaving them unable to register new players.

Globo Esporte reports that the case relates to an unpaid fee to Arouca, Portugal, for centre-back João Basso, whose August 2023 move is worth about €2.5 million.

On 12 January, CAS issued a decision giving Santos 45 days to pay or face punishment, with the deadline falling on Thursday 26. The legal department is reviewing the situation and the club will send a request for clarification to Fifa.

Meanwhile, Uruguayan midfielder Christian Oliva had been awaiting paperwork to be registered. The ban currently blocks his registration and he will not feature in the Paulistão, as squad changes are permitted only until Friday 20. He is not expected to be available for the tie against Novorizontino on Sunday 22 at 16:00 at the Jorjão.

Santos are trying to resolve the issue quickly to use the player in the Brasileiro. The midfielder’s representatives are irritated by the situation. The transfer window closes on three March.

So far, Santos have signed midfielder Gabriel Menino and forward Gabriel Barbosa on loan, and completed permanent deals for forwards Rony and Moisés.
