Santos are in talks to re-sign centre-back Lucas Veríssimo on a permanent deal, prioritising the move before the window closes on Tuesday 3.
The club first pursued a one-year loan, signalling they would pay 100% of his wages, but that stalled. According to GE, discussions over a permanent return have since progressed and are considered advanced.
Santos have offered about US$ 5 million for 70% of the player, payable in instalments, with a three-year contract. The player's family want to leave the country, and instability is viewed as aiding a release.
Veríssimo belongs to Al-Duhail and is on loan at Al-Wakrah. Qatar has been drawn into a regional military escalation since 28 February 2026 after direct conflict began between Iran, the United States and Israel, becoming a target due to US bases and Iranian retaliation.
In January, Santos made checks but were told he did not intend to return, with cost and his personal choice weighing heavily. His wife has since posted that she is returning to Brazil, specifically to Santos.
A Santos academy graduate, he made 106 appearances and scored three goals, and was part of the 2021 Copa Libertadores runners-up. He joined Benfica in 2021 and debuted for Brazil that September, but a knee injury in November sidelined him for nearly a year and he missed the 2022 World Cup. He later spent 2023 on loan at Corinthians before a move worth about €9 million to Al-Duhail.
The move is seen internally as addressing a current squad need.
