Santos are racing to settle a FIFA transfer ban so they can register new signings, with talks to recruit Arthur progressing. The club must pay €2,032,876.71, about R$ 12 million, to Monaco to lift the sanction.

According to Diario Do Peixe, negotiations for the midfielder are well advanced and hinge on clearing the ban.

Playing alongside Neymar Jr is seen as a lure for Arthur. The pair have already spoken about the move, with Neymar’s father also involved, and there is an expectation Arthur could live in the same condominium as the No 10. The two swapped signed shirts after Santos faced Grêmio in last year’s Brasileirão.

Santos prepared a loan proposal in January 2025 while Arthur was at Juventus, but Girona held priority. He joined the Spanish club on loan, then moved to Grêmio on loan in August.

His Juventus contract expired in June and he did not renew with Grêmio. A native of Goiânia, the 30-year-old came through Goiás before shining at Grêmio, then joined Barcelona and Juventus. While with the Italians he had loans at Liverpool, Fiorentina and Girona, before returning to Grêmio, and he has represented Brazil at under-17 and senior level.
