Santos say they have identified the supporter who spat at Mirassol’s Reinaldo during Sunday’s match at Vila Belmiro in the 24th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The club will forward the name to the relevant authorities and is considering sanctions.
Identifying the individual was viewed as a first step to try to avoid penalties for the club and any sanction on Vila Belmiro. The Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva is considering a complaint after referee Edina Alves included the incident in her match report.
The referee’s report recorded that at 25 minutes of the first half, Reinaldo, Mirassol’s number six, was spat at as he prepared to take a throw in, adding that the spit came from the area housing Santos supporters and the individual could not be identified at the time.
On Monday the case entered analysis by the prosecutor’s office, which is considering a possible charge against Santos.
Reinaldo criticised the act on social media, saying no professional goes to work to be spat in the face. He called it disgusting, lamentable and shameful, and said the images were clear. He added that he hopes the appropriate measures are taken so this does not happen again to him or any colleague.
