Santos have paused all Novibet branding across their commercial assets after a new federal measure banned the operation, promotion and advertising of fixed-odds betting in Brazil. The sponsorship contract remains in place for now.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the club is keeping its agreement with Novibet but has stopped delivering the advertising rights while the rule is in force. The Provisional Measure has carried the force of law since last Friday, the 25th, and is now before Congress.
New advertising, sponsorship, marketing and promotional activity by betting firms is prohibited, with a 10-day window to strip existing materials, ending on 5 October. Despite that transition, Santos moved immediately, so the brand is unlikely to appear on the shirt against São Paulo at Morumbis this Friday, the 2nd.
Novibet is Santos’s principal shirt sponsor. The deal was signed in February for three seasons, worth a fixed R$ 35 million per year plus variable sums. The suspension does not currently end the partnership, and both parties still must address the financial impact.
The government is ordering a phased exit of betting companies from the Brazilian market. Operator authorisations will be extinguished 30 days after publication of the measure, and websites and apps must cease operations from 6 October.
Santos are among the Série A clubs with a betting brand as main sponsor, having previously worked with Casa de Apostas, Dafabet, Blaze and 7KBet. The club also joined last week’s manifesto backing a regulated betting market, and now await clarity from Congress.
