Sebastiaan Bornauw says he fought hard to secure his loan to Hamburg only a year after joining Leeds United. "The first contact with HSV was made at the end of May, beginning of June. I fought hard at Leeds to come to Hamburg."

The Belgian arrived for £5million from Wolfsburg last summer and started five Premier League games. Leeds then signed Switzerland international Nico Elvedi, who has already established himself as a regular.

"The Bundesliga is a second home for me. I feel very comfortable in Germany. I really wanted to play for HSV. There's an abundance of tradition here, and I like that."

Bornauw made his club debut earlier in August in the DFB Pokal, a 3-0 win at third-tier SC Verl. He then started both opening Bundesliga fixtures, in which Hamburg conceded seven goals, including a 5-0 home defeat to Mainz.

He missed the last two matches with a muscle injury but has returned to training ahead of the international break. In his first game out, Hamburg conceded five to RB Leipzig, then claimed their first league points in a 2-1 home win over FC Koln.

While still contracted to Leeds, a return to Elland Road appears slim after a tricky bedding-in period. In a farewell note, he thanked supporters, called his spell a short but unforgettable chapter and said he loved the Elland Road nights.
