Seko Fofana, 31, has retired from Ivory Coast duty after a decorated spell capped by the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. The player said in a post on Instagram on Monday.

He departs with 34 caps and seven goals, having debuted against Morocco in November 2017. His final major tournament was the 2026 World Cup, where the Elephants reached the round of 32.

In his farewell message he thanked team-mates, staff and supporters, said representing the country filled him with pride, and called that success a childhood dream realised. He added he will remain the Elephants’ biggest supporter and backed a talented new generation.

Born in Paris, he played for France up to under-18 level, then received his first Ivory Coast call-up under Marc Wilmots.

His club career has included Manchester City’s academy and Fulham, plus a stint at Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. He is on loan at FC Porto from Rennes and helped the Azuis e Brancos win the league last season.

Herve Renard’s side now plan for midfield without their long-time anchor. They host Ghana on September 24 to begin 2027 Afcon qualifying, travel to Somalia five days later, then face Cameroon in a friendly in Abidjan on October 3.
