Semi-pro footballer Connor Charlton, 32, has been jailed for four years for dangerous driving and a penalty-points scam. He also received a driving ban of four years and seven months. Police in 2023 were alerted to social media clips of a BMW X3M Competition driven at highly dangerous speeds. After a crash on South Accommodation Road, Leeds, in September 2023, officers seized the car and downloaded its data.

The onboard computer showed the vehicle had been driven at up to 191mph, including on the M1, M62 and A1(M) in West Yorkshire and other roads.

Investigators also uncovered multiple videos featuring Charlton driving recklessly amid roaring engines, screeching tyres and laughter. He was found to be arranging for others to take speeding points, charging £250 per case.

Notes on his phone set out a fabricated account of the crash, blaming another driver who had supposedly left the scene. He was arrested in November 2023 and gave a no-comment interview.

Charlton, of Northcote Green, Hunslet, has two previous convictions, including ABH in 2019 after punching a man during a five-a-side match in Wakefield. He plays as a striker for Nostell Miners Welfare FC, according to the club’s website.

Defence submissions said his driving offences amounted to 24 months of madness, citing community work and his son’s autism. Judge Kate Rayfield said even a single count of perverting the course of justice would have justified prison, and highlighted the extreme danger posed by his driving.
