Liverpool, without talisman Mohamed Salah, claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Inter Milan as the Reds pushed up to eighth place on the Champions League table.
The Reds snapped their poor run thanks to a cheap penalty, which Dominik Szoboszlai converted to hand the Merseyside outfit a much-needed breather.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot needed a response from his players after some poor performances from the boys. Players like Curtis Jones stepped up to the plate.
Jones completed 67/70 (96%) accurate passes, 3/3 dribbles, won 5/8 duels, and made four recoveries.
The 24-year-old helped Liverpool win the midfield battle against Inter Milan’s savants, delivering a terrific all-round display.
He clearly blew Stephen Warnock away with his showing in the engine room.
The former Liverpool left-back said (via the BBC), “Curtis Jones was absolutely sensational tonight.
“I thought it was a real mature performance, and he actually grew up tonight. I know that sounds really daft because he’s already 24.”
The Reds will hope to continue in this vein this weekend when they host Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield.
Jones has struggled for consistency. He is a fantastic midfielder who can do it all on both sides of the ball, but putting together a long run of consistent performances is a problem.
Injuries have played their part in halting his development. However, he is fit and firing. He must make this performance his standard going forward.
The home-grown star must build on this performance. These types of showings will be pivotal as the Reds work to dig themselves out of their current rut.
And with Salah still in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, Liverpool desperately need figures like Jones to rise above the noise.
