Sergi Roberto’s future at FC Barcelona has become a topic of great intrigue as of late. From being assured a renewal to facing a near-certain exit, his situation has taken a complete 180-degree turn.

Although Roberto had been the custodian of Barcelona’s captain’s armband and was seen as a versatile operator who could lend his services in times of injury crises, the Barça hierarchy is not as eager as they were previously to award him a contract renewal.

This is largely because Hansi Flick does not consider him a crucial piece of his squad, contrary to former coach Xavi Hernandez.

Moreover, the management is also desperate to free up space in the squad to facilitate new signings.

Sevilla endured a tumultuous campaign in the recently concluded season, finishing 14th and struggling to maintain any consistency in both their performances and results.

As such, their waning status is likely to have dissuaded Roberto from exploring a move to the La Liga side. However, given his experience in the game, Roberto is sure to have other solid destinations to choose from.

Reports have previously suggested that FC Porto inquired about the 32-year-old midfielder, while Girona and Valencia also knocked on his door.

Roberto finds himself in a precarious situation

Roberto has been a free agent since June 30 and has a renewal offer pending, contingent on Barcelona meeting Financial Fair Play regulations. If not, the club may have to consider letting him go.

But the Spaniard is reportedly at ease with the possibility of bidding his beloved team farewell this summer, as he is unwilling to leave his future up in the air with minimal guarantees.
