Bologna took a significant step out of their crisis with this 2-1 victory away to Torino, as a Nikola Vlasic own goal and Santiago Castro show of skill ended their dire run.

The Rossoblu arrived in a huge crisis that threatened to end Vincenzo Italiano’s tenure, crashing out of the Coppa Italia quarter-final on penalties to Lazio midweek, with four consecutive Serie A defeats, just one win in the last 12 rounds. Tommaso Pobega was suspended, with Charalampos Lykogiannis, Torbjorn Heggem and Lorenzo De Silvestri injured. Toro got back on track by beating Lecce and drawing 2-2 with Fiorentina, but Rafa Obrador, Ardian Ismajli and Zanos Savva missed out. Nikola Vlasic and Matteo Prati returned from bans.

The stadium was almost empty, as Torino fans stepped up their protest against the club and President Urbano Cairo by boycotting the home games. Nonetheless, it was a special occasion, the first Serie A match shown live on BBC Alba.

Nikola Moro just failed to get clean contact on a header at the back post from Jonathan Rowe’s cross, while Santiago Castro couldn’t get enough power on his effort into the arms of Alberto Paleari.

Federico Bernardeschi cut inside to shoot from the right, forcing a tricky save from Paleari, while Rowe bent a wonderful right-foot curler inches past the far top corner from the edge of the box.

Bologna finally broke through after the restart, as Rowe tried to roll across from the left, but the deflection off Vlasic took it into the path of Moro, who tried and failed to connect with a back-heel flick from six yards, still doing enough to put off Paleari.

Bernardeschi blasted just over, then Paleari rushed out for a desperate save after Simon Sohm had sent defenders to ground with a smart turn.

Vlasic scored in the right net to equalise, as Duvan Zapata stung Lukasz Skorupski’s gloves from a tricky angle, his Torino teammate drilling the rebound through a defender’s legs.

Santiago Castro signed a new contract with Bologna this week and celebrated in style, as he gathered from Bernardeschi with his back to goal, turned Marianucci and prodded a precise snooker shot finish into the far bottom corner from six yards.

Guillermo Maripan couldn’t get enough on a corner at the back stick to surprise Skorupski, as Torino struggled to get back into the game.
