Seven times Monaco turned first-leg defeats into European progress | OneFootball

Monaco lost 3-2 to PSG in last Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg. The return is on Wednesday 25 February at 21:00 at the Parc des Princes. Nice-Matin highlights Monaco have overcome first-leg defeats seven times in Europe.

In 1979-80, Monaco reversed a 2-1 loss at Shakhtar Donetsk with a 2-0 win at Louis-II, Delio Onnis and Christian Dalger scoring.

In 1988-89, Reykjavik and Club Bruges both won 1-0 at home, then fell in the Principality, 2-0 and 6-1. Youssouf Fofana hit a treble, with Luc Sonor and José Touré also scoring.

In 2003-04, on the way to a 3-0 final defeat to Porto, Monaco edged Lokomotiv Moscow. They lost 2-1 in Russia, Fernando Morientes replying, then won 1-0 as Dado Prso, after missing a penalty, struck to advance on away goals.

Against Real Madrid, a 4-2 defeat at the Bernabéu was overturned by a 3-1 win at Louis-II. Ludovic Giuly scored twice and Morientes added one.

In 2016-17, Leonardo Jardim’s 4-4-2 reached the semi-finals before Juventus ended the run, 2-1 and 2-0. In the third qualifying round, a 2-1 loss at Fenerbahçe in Türkiye was followed by a 3-1 home win from a Radamel Falcao penalty and Valère Germain’s brace.

Seven months later, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City went out. Beaten 5-3 in England despite Kylian Mbappé’s breakout and a fine Falcao lob, Monaco won 3-1 through Mbappé, Fabinho and Tiemoué Bakayoko’s header to reach the quarter-finals.
