Sheffield United supporters must be surprised at Gustavo Hamer's lack of minutes despite Coventry City's struggles in the Premier League

It was a big summer of turnover for Sheffield United, as whilst most supporters won't be too displeased with the bulk of the exits from the club, they may be surprised by how one or two have gotten on since their departure.

After a difficult start to the 2025/26 Championship season under Ruben Selles, Sheffield United are still yet to truly recover from the damage done during the Spaniard's tenure both on and off the pitch.

The final year of their parachute payments was spent on the likes of Nils Zatterstrom, Mark McGuiness, Ehije Uhaki, and Mihail Polendakov, whilst each of Danny Ings, Ben Mee, Chiedozie Ogbene, and Ben Godfrey took up a large chunk of the wage bill.

Wilder would return to the helm after Selles lost each of his six games in charge, and though he would guide the club to a comfortable 13th-place finish last year, the lasting damage has been done.

Financial issues limited the Blades to free and loan signings in the most recent window, whilst an array of notable exits ensued.

When Sheffield United announced their retained list at the end of last season, it was announced that ten players would be leaving the club, with six returning to their parent clubs from their loans, and four being released on free transfers.

From there, it was always going to be a busy summer of turnover in South Yorkshire, and the loss of parachute payments meant the club was forced into making some sales they may not have necessarily sanctioned otherwise.

Andre Brooks joined Norwich City for around £8 million, Callum O'Hare joined Wrexham for around £6.5 million, and Gustavo Hamer rejoined Coventry City for around £6 million, with each providing their own individual blows.

Hamer, 29, may be the most impactful departure of all, though his return to the CBS Arena has been far from the fireworks that were anticipated.

Hamer joined Sheffield United for around £15 million in the summer of 2023 from Coventry, having shone for the Sky Blues in the Championship under Mark Robins, scoring 19 and assisting 24 in 132 games for the Sky Blues across all competitions.

Across his three years in South Yorkshire, Hamer would be an almost ever-present in the middle of the park, going on to score 22 and assist 29 in 123 appearances across all competitions.

Coventry, who are looking to maintain their status as a Premier League club, sought to re-sign their former star this summer, but so far, it hasn't gone exactly to plan.

After four league games, Coventry are yet to pick up a point, or even find the back of the net for that matter, with Hamer making just three appearances off the bench, whilst making little contribution in the club's 4-2 away win over Plymouth Argyle in the League Cup.

It hasn't been the homecoming he would have hoped for, but time is on his side, as he looks to rediscover the form Coventry and Sheffield United fans know he is capable of reaching.

Since arriving on English shores in 2020 with Coventry from Dutch side PEC Zwolle, the midfielder has been one of the Championship's most consistent performers.

31 goals and 44 assists in a combined 201 games in the English second tier have meant he averages just over one direct goal contribution every three games, and with four goals and seven assists in 36 appearances in his one year in the Premier League previously, he has proven to be more than capable of performing at the highest level.

Last season, Hamer grabbed the most assists in the division with 13 despite missing nine games and playing in a wider role than he has previously operated in.

His affiliation with Coventry will have been a huge reason behind his return to the club, though with numbers like that and still only 29, the Sky Blues' reasoning for wanting him back takes little understanding.

Given Hamer's starring role for Sheffield United over the past few years, some Blades fans may be surprised at his lack of impact at Coventry since returning to the club.

Coventry have a lot of competition in forward areas, leaving the Dutchman with a tough task to break into the side, but given Coventry's lack of goals, his creative spark could be exactly what they need. Fitness might well be a factor, whilst Lampard has also been keen to give the players who won promotion with Cov their fair crack at the Premier League. Yet, given the clamour for Hamer, it's slightly surprising he's not been used more.

Sheffield United supporters will be keeping an eye on his situation at the club, and whether he can find the minutes his performances for the Blades deserve.
