Tom Cannon has admitted he was never looking to leave Sheffield United this summer amid interest from Preston North End and Stoke City

Sheffield United went through a tricky transfer window, with the Blades seeing numerous stars depart Bramall Lane over the summer; now they can take solace in recent comments from one of their key performers, Tom Cannon.

Indeed, Sheffield United had one of the toughest summers of any Championship club.

With parachute payments expiring, the Blades' cash flow took a serious hit, with only free and loan signings being their method of bringing players in, whilst the likes of Andre Brooks, Gustavo Hamer, and Callum O'Hare all left the club.

Head coach Chris Wilder will certainly have had better windows during his time at the helm at Bramall, but he will be more than pleased with the recent comments of one of his current stars.

With Brooks, Hamer, and O'Hare all leaving the club, Sheffield United have been left in a tricky position to rebuild their attack, and whilst Romelle Donovan, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Jordan Ayew may go some way to mitigating those departures, Wilder will be looking to Irish striker Cannon to lead the way.

Cannon, 23, joined the Blades in a £10 million deal from Leicester City in January 2025, and though he has struggled at times, he remains one of the club's most important players, as Wilder will be delighted with his recent comments.

The forward was the subject of interest from both Preston North End and Stoke City over the summer, two former clubs, and when asked whether he ever considered jumping ship with his former teammates, Cannon said: "No, not at all.

"I want to be United’s number nine. In my eyes, it’s a Premier League club, so if I’m scoring goals for a Premier League club then it’s great."

When asked about how he deals with the speculation, he said: "To be honest, it’s quite easy

"If you see rumours or whatever, half the time they are just that. Rumours. They’re just little things that a fan account has created on social media or something. I’ve got an agent, so he deals with all that.

“If I see something or something I don’t know is going to happen, he’ll phone me. So I kind of just leave it to him and let him crack on. If anything was going to happen, I’m sure my agent would know about it and not a fan account."

Cannon's commitment to the Blades will be a huge boost for the club in a time of uncertainty, and Wilder will be hoping the striker can rediscover the form he displayed in loan stints with Preston and Stoke.

Preston and Stoke's interest in Cannon came as little surprise to anyone, with the forward having enjoyed excellent loan spells with both clubs previously.

The Lilywhites, following the departures of Milutin Osmajic, Michael Smith, Daniel Jebbison, and Lewis Dobbin, were looking for a new option up top, and set their sights on a potential move for Cannon.

Stoke were looking for a new star centre-forward to lead their line this campaign, and even with the addition of George Hirst from Ipswich Town, they were looking to complement the Scot with the further addition of Cannon.

As it happened, Cannon has remained at Bramall Lane, and his intentions to be going nowhere anytime soon are news that Blades fans will appreciate.

Wilder has an almighty task on his hands to keep his side in contention for a place in the Championship top eight this season, having lost three key attackers and not spending a penny to replace any of them.

In a time of uncertainty, the 58-year-old will massively appreciate Cannon's comments and commitment to the club, especially when he could have tried to force through a move elsewhere.

Cannon has the opportunity to become the main man at Bramall Lane, and if his recent statement is anything to go by, it won't be a surprise to see him do so before too long.
