Harry Souttar is nearing a return to fitness after suffering an Achilles injury late last year
Sheffield United are eyeing a move for Harry Souttar in January amid his recovery from injury at Leicester City.
According to The Star, the Blades are monitoring the defender’s situation as he continues his climb back to full fitness after an issue with his Achilles.
The centre-back spent time on loan at Bramall Lane last season, but it was cut short due to this injury, with his last appearance coming on 26 December.
The Australian was sent back to the Foxes, where he began his journey back to fitness as he now looks to earn a place in Martí Cifuentes’ first team plans.
Souttar has struggled for game time with Leicester since his January 2023 move from Stoke City, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to get ahead of the likes of Wout Faes, Jannik Vestergaard and Caleb Okoki in the pecking order.
It is believed that Sheffield United are monitoring the situation with Souttar following a promising update on his health from Cifuentes.
The Spaniard has claimed that the 26-year-old is coming back into the team, and that he is glad to have the extra option to choose from in his backline.
“It’s a credit to the staff and the team,” said Cifuentes, via The Star.
“Soutts is coming back from a long-term injury, so that’s a great possibility for me.
“When I look back to the bench, we have a lot of possibilities as well.”
Souttar was included in Leicester’s 25-man squad despite his injury and the number of other options that could’ve taken his place.
However, it remains to be seen whether he will actually have a role to play in the team, having made just 15 league appearances for the Foxes in his two-and-a-half years at the club.
It’s understood that Souttar remains quite popular at Sheffield United, and that the possibility of a move in January is on the cards.
The defender has also previously admitted that he enjoyed his time on loan at Bramall Lane, which could open the door to a deal in the winter.
A move for Souttar in January might just suit all parties at this stage, as it’s been a terrible time for him at Leicester.
He could get a fresh start at Bramall Lane, where supporters have already endeared themselves to him off the back of his performances while on loan.
The move from Stoke to the Foxes hasn’t worked out, and this injury was just further pain on top, as he has missed almost a year of his career.
Whether it’s another loan or a permanent move, a deal with Sheffield United would make sense for all parties at this stage unless he can convince Cifuentes that he has to be in the starting lineup consistently.
