With Sheffield United stuck in a rut, FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit believes that Gus Hamer may move on
No one could have predicted the start of the 2025/26 Championship campaign that Sheffield United have had, with the Blades currently sitting rock bottom of the Championship with only three points to show for their efforts after nine games played.
Sheffield United were tipped as one of the sides to challenge for the league title after narrowly missing out on promotion via the play-offs last season. However, that target seems all but over for them now, with the goal now merely being to have some stability at the club after a few months of turmoil.
With a change in manager as well as personnel on the pitch, you would think it would benefit a club like Sheffield United who were on the brink of promotion. The freshen up of ideas, as well as bringing in the likes of seasoned professionals like Ben Mee and Danny Ings, should have been the difference to take them to the next level, but it just hasn't panned out that way and they are back where they ended last season now, with Chris Wilder at the helm.
Despite the recent rotten form, it's no secret that the Blades have some of the most talented individuals in the Championship, like Gus Hamer who, just like the rest of his teammates, has struggled to find his feet this year. If the rut were to continue, it wouldn't come as a surprise if a player like Hamer were to look for a potential exit route.
With this season already looking like a write-off for Sheffield United and their fans, the main aspect now is trying to retain the key players and leaders in the squad that can recover from this blip in the long-term. However, one player that the Blades may find hard to keep on their books if the bad form is to continue is Hamer.
Speaking to Football League World, Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy from Blades Ramble, believes that Hamer could be one to potentially leave the club, but on a broader scale thinks that Blades fans must accept where they are at in this current situation and face the harsh realities: "I think there is a big chance that Gus [Hamer] moves on, possibly in January.
"But, again, having Gus [Hamer] in the team isn't helping us at the moment either. None of them, none of the players are playing to their ability. Whatever we're doing at the moment isn't quite working, and it's down to the manager to find that formula, to get us playing the way we know we can. And Gus [Hamer] is a part of that.
"So, yeah, I think there is a chance that we lose Gus [Hamer], whether it be January or I certainly think that he'll be looking at his options again in the summer. But that is part of football, we have to acknowledge where we are currently."
After being a standout Championship performer for both Coventry and Sheffield United for some time now, the Hamer may want out of Bramall Lane as soon as January in order to refind his form.
The Dutchman has merely provided one assist in the league this season, which is very unlike his usual standards. The 28-year-old contributed to 18 goals in the Championship last season, which was his best tally since his days with the Sky Blues, where he put up 21 goals and assists in the 2022/23 campaign.
Jimmy believes that the Blades could see plenty of changes to the team from now until the end of next summer, and not just Hamer, if results don't take a turn for the better: "We lose our parachute payments in the summer, and we have to face the fact that we are going to lose some key players. If not in January, then certainly in the summer, if we're unable to get promoted, which it looks very unlikely we're even going to be in that conversation at the moment."
