Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City will likely be delighted with the recent news surrounding Blackburn Rovers against Ipswich Town, whose abandoned game last month has caused quite the stir.

On September 20, the Tractor Boys travelled to East Lancashire to partake in their sixth match of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, but that encounter wouldn’t end up being completed.

There were intense weather and wind warnings on that date, and after continued rainfall onto the Ewood Park surface, the pitch was waterlogged. This subsequently saw the match abandoned, much to the dismay of Rovers.

Blackburn were leading the Tractor Boys 1-0 with 10 minutes left to play and also enjoyed a man advantage, after Jacob Greaves’ sending off earlier in the match.

It was soon decided by the EFL that the fixture would be replayed in full, which was a massive source of frustration for Rovers supporters. Recently, it was revealed that the rearranged match will take place on Tuesday, December 2.

Automatically, this decision negatively affects Blackburn, due to the fact that they were almost certain to clinch an extremely important victory over top Championship opposition. The fallout of the abandoned clash has clearly affected Valerien Ismael’s side, as they have picked up just one point from their following three fixtures.

Ipswich Town aren’t likely to appreciate an added trip to East Lancashire during a hectic time of the season, even if it provides them with a rare opportunity to have another shot at winning a game they seemed destined to lose.

Throughout this entire saga, Coventry City and Sheffield Wednesday may be the teams that end up in the best position.

Blackburn and Ipswich are set to do battle on December 2, which comes during an extremely hectic period in the EFL calendar.

Teams begin to regularly play three matches a week, which leads to increased injuries and opportunities for those with large squads to take advantage.

The last thing that any club wants during this time is extra games, which is exactly what Ipswich and Blackburn have been treated to.

This will be of great satisfaction to Coventry and Wednesday, who are set to face off against the Tractor Boys and Rovers, respectively.

Whilst they both enjoy a week’s break between matches, their opponents will not, which provides them with a clear advantage over 90 minutes.

Significantly, both of these encounters already have an extra element of importance. Coventry City have emerged as one of Ipswich Town’s potential title rivals, and therefore whoever comes out on top in that clash will take a great deal of confidence with it.

Blackburn and Wednesday are currently separated by just one point in the Championship standings, with both sides looking like potential relegation candidates at this early stage.

With these factors in mind, Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday will automatically enter their matches with both a physical and mental advantage, as they know that their opponents will naturally tire before them.

This could have huge ramifications at both ends of the Championship table and fuel further outrage from Rovers and Ipswich supporters.

Obviously, both Ipswich and Blackburn won’t appreciate having to fit an extra 90 minutes of football into their already hectic winter schedules, but there could be some solace for one of the sides.

If either Rovers or the Tractor Boys can come out on top, it would at least give them the satisfaction of knowing that they’ve got an extra three points on the board.

Therefore, even if they do lose their contests the following weekend, the extra match wasn’t a complete waste of time.

Naturally, this would inflict further pain on the losing side, who have had to participate in an extra game of football with no reward at the end of it.

Rovers have more to lose in this regard, as they seemed set to claim victory the first time around. If they fail to beat Ipswich and then get bested by Wednesday, unseen outrage will pour from the Ewood Park faithful.
