Sheffield Wednesday's bid to bolster their frontline could see them move for Hull City's Mason Burstow

Sheffield Wednesday have been the busiest side in the transfer market in the EFL this summer, but they're far from done when it comes to additions.

The Owls are rebuilding a squad from the ashes of the Dejphon Chansiri reign, where numerous first-team players left amidst late wage payments and the need to raise funds over the past 12 months.

So far, the first transfer window under the Arise ownership has been very productive, with a clear strategy in place and new signings that have Sheffield Wednesday fans excited about their promotion chances as they return to League One.

But Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen admitted last week during their pre-season training camp in Hungary that more players were needed to strengthen the squad as a whole ahead of the third-tier curtain-raiser at Leyton Orient on August 15.

More specifically, he spoke about how the squad needed a new number nine to help bolster what is a rather young, inexperienced striker core, Jamal Lowe aside, and they're looking at adding a recent promotion winner to their ranks to do just that.

Sheffield Wednesday, indeed, want a new striker, but they've got their eyes on a forward who can help provide cover across the entire frontline, too, as the Sheffield Star have revealed that the Owls are interested in Hull City's Mason Burstow.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers and was the driving force at the top end of the pitch in the opening stages of the campaign, netting seven times in the first 11 league games.

Burstow's output decreased as the year went on, as Sam Dalby and then January loan arrival Johnny Kenny dislodged him from the starting eleven, but he still ended the campaign with a team-high 12 goals and six assists in 29 third-tier starts.

The second half of the season saw him start games behind the striker either on the wings or as an attacking midfielder, which would lend him to fit in well in the 4-2-3-1 system that Henrik Pedersen is looking to use at Hillsborough in the upcoming campaign.

Despite his career year, Burstow returns to a Hull side preparing for a Premier League campaign after their unlikely promotion last year.

The 22-year-old likely would have been tipped to make the step-up in the Championship with the Tigers, but he's now deemed expendable, with him being amongst those tipped to leave the MKM Stadium amidst Hull's financial difficulties in the wake of their promotion last month.

Contact has been made between both parties over a potential deal, which could see the 22-year-old loaned out, as Wednesday are operating close to an agreed spending limit following their exit from administration in May.

With Burstow falling out of favour at Bolton as the season went on last year, there's been some mixed reaction amongst Sheffield Wednesday fans to the reports linking the Owls with the 22-year-old.

Some feel that they'll need better operators at the top end of the pitch to match the quality they've brought in the midfield, while others see potential for him to kick on and grow at Hillsborough.

"Couldn’t even start games for Bolton in the 2nd half of the season. Proper meh," one fan said.

"We need another 2 strikers imo. I think we’re at a point we go all out for Ross Stewart and see if he bites. We need a proven goal threat at this level," another added, highlighting Burstow's versatility as a positive, but demanding a seasoned goalscoring threat, too.

In contrast, another Wednesday supporter said, "Yeah, why not I suppose! Could be a good addition & still at the right age to improve his game enough to score goals in the Championship!"

Ultimately, while Burstow did cool off massively after his electric start to last season at Bolton, that start and the odd goal he managed off the bench afterwards will give a lot of encouragement that the 22-year-old can really kick on at Hillsborough.

If the Hull frontman can find that consistency, there's a possibility he could be that 20-goal-a-season striker that every side craves.

That's obviously not a given, though, so it's understandable why some Wednesday supporters are clamouring for someone who has shown a goalscoring knack in the third tier more consistently this summer.
