Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Southampton goalkeeper Joe Lumley on a free transfer from Bristol City, handing him a two-year deal. According to Sainstmarching.com, the move follows an emergency loan at Hillsborough.

In October 2025 he started two Championship games for the Owls. The club have now acted to make the switch permanent.

Lumley said he jumped at the chance to return, having sensed the club’s scale and the supporters’ passion, describing the decision as a no-brainer. He added he is there to serve the team and will train and perform as hard as he can every day.

It marks a fresh start two years after he said at Southampton that an England call-up was still his dream. He joined Russell Martin’s side in August 2023 as back-up to Gavin Bazunu.

The 31-year-old made eight appearances across the Championship and Premier League. After an injury to Aaron Ramsdale during the Saints’ troubled 2024/25 campaign, he played three times and conceded seven goals, then left for Bristol City at the end of his deal.

He has not been the strongest with his feet or in shot-stopping, and a move to the atmospheric League One club could provide the games he needs.
