Ever since, and even perhaps towards the end of, the 2024/25 campaign, Wednesday have been in a bit of limbo with manager Danny Rohl linked with several jobs, such as Southampton and Rangers.

It now appears that, unless the 36-year-old German was to walk away from the club, he will remain in charge at Hillsborough through pre-season and at the beginning of next season. Talks between Rohl and players at the club are reportedly set to be held to ‘clear the air’ and bring clarity to the situation.

Despite all of that, it has now been reported that they have lined up a potential target for this summer’s transfer window.

Wednesday take a look at midfielder Konate

According to The Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday are taking a look at Mohamed Konate, with the possibility of signing him this summer.

The 20-year-old is believed to have spent some time training with the club at England’s headquarters, St George’s Park, although, according to the report, there is no certainty as to whether that stint will be extended.

Konate is a free agent having departed Portuguese third-tier outfit SC Covilha this summer. He helped them avoid relegation from Liga 3 in the 2024/25 season.

Wednesday’s embargo means they are banned from paying a fee for a player for the next three transfer windows, with only free agents and loan deals that do not include a loan fee permitted. They are also restricted to a £7,000-per-week wage cap.

Konate came through at FC OSA in the Ivory Coast before spending time at Portuguese clubs Vilarinho and Oliveira Douro during the 2023/24 season. He was then without a club until his move to Covilha in December 2024.

Turbulent summer for Sheffield Wednesday

With continued uncertainty over Rohl and the potential state of the Sheffield Wednesday squad by the time they kick off their Championship campaign against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium next month, they have already seen a few exits.

Loanees such as James Beadle, last season’s Player of the Year Shea Charles and Toulouse winger Ibrahim Cissoko have all departed, whilst experienced players such as Stuart Armstrong, Ben Hamer and Marvin Johnson have all left at the end of their deals, alongside Ryo Hatsuse.

Centre-back Michael Ihiekwe has joined Blackpool on a free transfer with Pol Valentin and Mallik Wilks moving to Preston North End and Pendikspor respectively.

It has also been confirmed in the last few days that attacker Anthony Musaba has joined Turkish Super Lig outfit Samsunspor for an undisclosed fee.
