The USA international has established himself as one of the top players in the league after scoring 16 and 15 goals in the past two seasons for the Canaries despite suffering injury issues in that period.

Sargent has continued that form in the current campaign, enjoying a brilliant start after finding the net five times in four games.

Therefore, it’s no surprise there has been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of the 26-year-old, with a host of clubs in England and across Europe credited with an interest in the player.

Wolfsburg made a big play to land Sargent, but despite having an offer worth up to £20m accepted for the striker, the ex-Werder Bremen man turned down the chance to return to the Bundesliga.

And, it has now been revealed by journalist Alan Nixon that Burnley tried to bring Sargent to the Premier League, with the newly-promoted side having a bid rejected by the Canaries for the star man.

Incredibly, he claims that Burnley offered just £1.5m up front for Sargent, with ‘complicated extras’ meaning the overall package would reach £10m.

Norwich City are right to stick firm on Josh Sargent valuation

This is a remarkable development, as a £10m bid would be considered an insulting offer from Norwich’s perspective for their best player.

Sargent has shown his class over a few years, and he is undoubtedly one of the top players in the Championship, so the going rate would be around £20m.

Clearly, Burnley’s offer is nowhere near that, and when you consider that the Canaries have Sargent under contract until 2028, they were under no pressure to sell at all, particularly as they had brought in a big fee for Borja Sainz.

After Wolfsburg’s offer, all interested clubs knew the sort of fee that would be required to do business, so Burnley were obviously trying to sign him on the cheap, but it was never going to happen.

To his credit, Sargent hasn’t allowed the transfer talk to distract him this summer, and whilst Norwich have had a disappointing first four games, the striker has been brilliant for new boss Liam Manning.

Now, with a settled squad, the Norfolk outfit will hope to climb the table and push for the play-offs this season, and Sargent is going to be crucial if they are to seal a return to the Premier League.
