Former QPR keeper Rob Green revealed that the players' wages didn't drop when the club were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

QPR have spent over a decade outside the Premier League, and they won’t be returning to the top flight under Julien Stephan this season.

However, it’s fair to say the Frenchman has joined a very different club to the one that last won promotion to the Premier League.

During Tony Fernandes’ time in charge, the R’s were very ambitious, as they brought in many high profile players to try and help the team stay up, and then to win promotion.

Rio Ferdinand, Ji-sung Park, Julio Cesar and Jose Bosingwa were just some of the names to arrive at Loftus Road over the period of a few years, and whilst they were signed with good intentions, QPR became known for reckless and wild spending that would ultimately cost the club in the long run.

Rob Green reveals QPR players didn’t have relegation clauses in their contracts

Rob Green was part of the Londoners’ squad at this time, with the keeper making over 100 appearances for the club over a four-year period.

And, speaking on Ben Foster’s podcast, he shared an interesting insight that highlighted the off-field mistakes QPR made, as he confirmed players didn’t see their wages reduced following relegation to the Championship - as he explained that they actually ended up earning more money in the second tier!

“This is how it was (a relegation wage drop of 50%) at West Ham, yes. At QPR, no, you got a pay rise. “There are more games, so more appearance money, and you get a promotion bonus. At QPR (in the Premier League) you play 38 games, so you get whatever and your appearance fees. Then, you get relegated, there’s no bonus. “In the Championship, there are 46 games, and you win, and you get promoted, so you get a promotion bonus in there as well.”

It’s usually common practice for Premier League clubs to insert wage drops in players’ contracts if they’re relegated, with reports revealing it’s even in place at Tottenham as they battle to stay up this season, despite the fact they have rarely been involved in a relegation fight prior to the current campaign.

This says a lot about the way QPR were run previously, and that’s why they found it so hard to shift players on after they were relegated.

Ultimately, the owner has to take responsibility for that, and whilst they were trying to make the club a force on the pitch by throwing money at it, they clearly got it wrong with how they went about things.

As mentioned, this mismanagement caused QPR a lot of problems, and they reached a settlement of £42m with the EFL in 2018 in relation to overspending on their way to promotion four years prior, where their wages made up 195% of their turnover.

So, it was never sustainable, but a lot has changed over the years, and they are now in a more stable position, even if they have posted losses in recent years.

That shows the challenges that football clubs face to try and be competitive, but if QPR do ever reach the Premier League again, you can be sure that relegation wage drops will be part of players’ contracts!
