Its safe to say that Standard Liege fans would have been hoping for a summer in which the club finally turned a corner. After a year of transfer embargos and almost being embroiled in a relegation battle, the fans were hoping that this summer would be different. However, the club just lost 5-1 to recently promoted Dender in a friendly. Yes, friendly results are hardly indicative of what will happen next season, but it is certainly a result that will worry Standard fans.
The club are operating on a very small budget, with owners 777 reportedly looking to sell the club as its become clear they do not have the capability of running it. Players they have signed have so far been free agents or loans, given that they do not have the funds for transfer fees. Key players, or big earners, are looking to be sold to raise funds to improve the squad overall.
The club is crying out for an injection of experience and just talent. One player linked that could bring some of that would be former Watford defender Christian Kabasele, who was recently linked with a move back to Belgium. With a passionate fan base that, when things are going well, can act as a 12th man, getting things right this summer is imperative. This friendly defeat will set the alarm bells going amongst the clubs fanbase and put more pressure on the sides hierarchy to be busy in the transfer market. Head coach Ivan Leko will also be desperate for reinforcements before the Pro League season starts.
