Atlético Madrid are seeking a loan for 2026/27 for Mexican midfielder Obed Vargas, but his destination remains unclear as Sevilla and Getafe emerge as options and reports conflict.

Diario Récord reports that Sevilla are close to securing him on a loan with no option to buy. It says an agreement was reached before the clubs met on Saturday, which it says explains his omission from Atlético’s squad.

Meanwhile, AS claims Getafe have virtually lined up his arrival on loan. The chance to play in the Conference League is said to appeal, putting Getafe ahead of Valencia, Sevilla, Alavés and Málaga.

Vargas, 21, was born in Anchorage on 5 August 2005 to Mexican parents. He came through Seattle Sounders’ academy and Tacoma Defiance, debuting in MLS at 15 years and 351 days, one of the youngest in the league.

Across five seasons with Seattle he made 130 appearances and scored eight goals, winning the Concacaf Champions League in 2022 and the Leagues Cup in 2025. He joined Atlético in February 2026 and has been a Mexico international since 2024. He is set to obtain a Spanish passport soon.

Comfortable as a holding or box-to-box midfielder, he is noted for tactical awareness, progression on the ball and defensive work, though he can struggle in physical and aerial duels. Atlético’s next moves will decide his destination, and for now it remains unresolved.
