Arne Slot has said Jeremie Frimpong is an option to replace Mohamed Salah when the Liverpool winger departs for the Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
AFCON 2025 will take place during the upcoming campaign with the tournament beginning on December 21st and running until January 18th. Salah is set to depart to lead Egypt’s challenge for success, leaving Liverpool without their talisman on the right-wing.
In the current squad, Liverpool lack a natural alternative to Salah. Harvey Elliott has often deputised for Salah in recent seasons, but the 22-year-old is in talks with RB Leipzig over a move to Germany. Elsewhere, Federico Chiesa has struggled for regular football.
Slot believes new signing Frimpong could fill the role, stating his belief that the Dutch defender is capable of impressing in a more advanced role.
“We have definitely thought about that and we have brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back but I also think and feel he can play as a right-winger,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield.
“We have thought about the fact we are going to miss Mo, I think as a maximum for six games, but that is quite a lot in the Premier League – especially when you see how well he did last season.
“Signing Jeremie Frimpong was for multiple reasons but one of them was that he could replace Mo if he was not there. There are other options to replace Mo with as well but Jeremie is definitely one of them.”
