Slot suggests Liverpool midfielder could be future captain | OneFootball

Arne Slot has praised the performances of Dominik Szoboszlai this season and believes the Liverpool midfielder has led ‘by example’ this season.

Szoboszlai’s superb season continued in midweek with the opening goal as Liverpool beat Marseille 3-0 in the Champions League. The Hungary international’s goal was his seventh of the campaign in all competitions, with Szoboszlai having been a standout for the Reds despite an inconsistent season as a collective.

With Virgil van Dijk set to turn 35 this summer, the midfielder has been earmarked as a potential future captain at Anfield – a role he holds for the national team.

Slot believes Szoboszlai has improved this season and agreed that the 25-year-old has become a leader in the side.

“Dom is having a very good season indeed,” Slot told the media ahead of facing Bournemouth this weekend.

“He’s been a part of two moments recently that aren’t his standards. Missing a penalty is not common for him but it happens and his mistake against Barnsley was not one you see often and he acknowledged that.

“Apart from his goal, and a smart goal with a little bit of help from one of my coaching staff members, he showed again how important he is off the ball and also when we have the ball because he gave a great assist to Hugo Ektike who unfortunately hit the woodwork.

“It always starts by leading by example and that’s what he’s always done. Always without the ball incredible the way he can press, the intensity, he keeps running backwards and forwards and I think he’s improved this season on the ball, with more confidence and more often involved.”
