Chris Smalling trained with FC Porto for the first time on Thursday, a day after his arrival.

The 36-year-old England international has signed until the end of the season with an option for a further year. The club said in a statement that he joined as a free agent and that the extension depends on sporting objectives.

He arrives after leaving Al Fayha in Saudi Arabia at the end of last season, having previously represented Roma and Manchester United.

He felt strongly wanted by the head coach and the club, which did all it could to bring him in. Hearing how he was viewed, how he would fit and what he could add, made sense to him. After the coach had studied his games, around 10 minutes of conversation convinced Smalling the move should happen.

Before the customary initiation at Olival, he offered brief remarks as he settled into the squad.
