Lyall Cameron’s exit has split the fanbase. Many fans are unhappy that the Sheep are getting one of our players. He could strengthen their team considerably.
As Ibrox Noise detailed recently, it was the wrong time and bad circumstances for Cameron. He was signed by Nils Koppen for Philippe Clement, who was then fired soon after. Russell Martin was not really interested when Cameron arrived that summer. He was not his player. Danny Rohl has not rated him either. He has shown no interest in him.
For all the joy and success elsewhere, fans do not agree with Rohl on this one. We looked at the data. Cameron and Finlay Curtis ranked lowly at Rangers for the stats. That data is a key part of Rangers recruitment and forensic analysis. It has mostly not worked. Maybe it is starting to now, but time will tell. Cameron was a victim of that approach and circumstance.
Consequently, he has gone on loan at age 23 to Aberdeen. He will not make it at Rangers at that age. He needed minutes elsewhere. The manager also signed a player in his position only one year older. That shows Cameron is not part of Rohl’s plan at all.
Fans are disappointed. They felt Cameron deserved a chance. It is curious they disagree with Rohl on this decision. Yet they trust him elsewhere completely. ‘In Danny we trust’ is clearly not all encompassing.
What do Ibrox Noise think? We did not see enough of Cameron to judge either way. The point is simple. He has gone to Aberdeen. It is hard to wish him well there. He is at a club we dislike.
Rangers fans dislike Aberdeen intensely. Outside Celtic, they are among our most hated teams. Possibly only Hibs rival that feeling. We cannot stand the Sheep. Loaning them a player is not popular. Anywhere else would have been preferred.
A major reason for this decision is Aberdeen’s league position. They are no threat to Rangers this season and they sit bottom six. They will almost certainly remain bottom six after the split. Plus they are a mess. That is why he has gone there.
If Cameron shines, he may earn a permanent move elsewhere. It will not be Rangers. As Ibrox Noise has said many times, history is clear. Rangers players who go out on loan rarely return as first team starters.
There are vague exceptions. Allan McGregor is the famous one. He went out on loan and returned to become one of our greatest goalkeepers. Those cases are extremely rare.
In around 99% of cases, a loan means the player is not in the plans. Cameron has been a victim of circumstance. Ibrox Noise will watch how he does at Aberdeen.
We wish him personally well. Lyall Cameron’s exit is for him. We do not wish success on that team. It is a strange choice. We have explained why it happened. It is a bittersweet situation.
