With the Premier League season getting underway in the weekend just gone, top flight sides will be making their own decisions on players for the season ahead, with a number of quality stars becoming available as their future becomes clearer.

As a result, Plymouth Argyle will be one of a number of clubs looking to take advantage of the situation unfolding at the top of the pyramid, and add a player or two who can add a sprinkle of stardust to the side for the campaign to come.

Wayne Rooney will be looking to get his Argyle side clicking before too long, and here we take a look at two additions who could help the former Birmingham City boss to succeed at Home Park during 24/25.

Carl Rushworth

The Pilgrims will be looking to find themselves a new competitor for the number one spot at Home Park for the season to come, after Michael Cooper departed the club to join Sheffield United earlier in the month.

The academy graduate rejected a new deal earlier in the summer, and with less than 12 months Sefton his deal in Devon, the Pilgrims were forced to cash in on the 24-year-old, with the Blades said to have paid £2 million for his services, with an extra £2 million in add-ons potentially to come.

With Conor Hazard now the only glovesman at the club with professional experience, the Greens need to be looking for top replacements to join the side for the season ahead, with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carl Rushworth still available as it stands.

The 23-year-old excelled in the previous campaign during a loan spell with Swansea City in the second tier, and his ball-playing attributes will be warmly welcomed on the south coast, as Rooney looks to build a side that is comfortable in possession all over the pitch.

For all of Hazard’s outstanding shot-stopping attributes, his ability with ball at feet leaves a lot to be desired, and Rushworth has already proven his comfort in possession during his time with the possession-heavy Welsh side last season.

Although there are links to Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle ruminating as it stands, bringing Rushworth to the club on loan for a season would also be a sound bit of business to fix an issue that needs addressing imminently.

Sonny Aljofree

A player with links to Plymouth Argyle and Manchester United, Sonny Aljofree could be a player who could tick a lot of boxes for the Pilgrims, and there would be plenty of reasons for him to join the Devon outfit.

With his father Hasney having a memorable career at Home Park near the turn of the century, Aljofree was born in the Ocean City, before going on to excel during his childhood at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old centre-back has been a regular feature for the Red Devils’ academy side in recent seasons, and was a prominent part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup back in 2022.

Despite brining Kornel Szucs to the club earlier in the transfer window, Argyle may still benefit from an extra figure in the heart of defence, who can help sure up a backline that is left exposed time and time again due to the attacking game plan that Rooney is implementing at the club.

The teenager has also filled in at a defensive midfield role in the past, and with the likes of Adam Forshaw, Darko Gyabi and Adam Randell needing some support in that area, a homecoming for Aljofree could be a nice bit of business before August comes to an end.
