Southampton have moved ahead in the chase for Dan Neil, with talks now at an advanced stage, according to Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old left Sunderland in January on an initial loan to Ipswich Town, who sealed promotion on the final day. He is set to become a free agent next week when his contract expires, having weighed up options after Rangers were seen as early frontrunners.

Southampton reached the play-offs under Tonda Eckert, then were expelled after admitting to spying on Middlesbrough before the semi final and on two other opponents. The club have stood by Eckert and are preparing for the new season, with the head coach thought to remain under FA investigation.

Recently relegated Wolves and West Ham United also retain interest. Even so, Southampton are seen as the likeliest destination for the academy graduate, who won two promotions with his boyhood club.

Stade Rennais are making progress in their move for striker Eliezer Mayenda, Ouest France reports. He is understood to be open to leaving after spending most of last season as third choice, and the Ligue 1 side are viewed as early frontrunners.

It is unclear if a loan or permanent transfer is being discussed, though Mayenda is thought to prefer a permanent move. Given Sunderland signed him for less than £1 million, any sale would likely deliver a major profit under the SCR rules.
