Southampton and West Ham are two of the seven clubs eyeing a deal for Nelson Deossa in the final week of the transfer window

West Ham and Southampton face competition from a number of clubs, including Ipswich Town, in the race to sign Nelson Deossa.

According to Spanish outlet Diario de Sevilla, the two Championship sides are waiting to be given the green light by the midfielder before being able to complete a potential move.

However, they are facing the challenge of several suitors all being in the same position, with the Tractor Boys among them.

Real Betis are keen to agree a sale for the Colombian in order to free up space in their wage budget.

But he did feature in their opening round of the new La Liga season, coming off the bench in their 1-0 win over Real Sociedad.

Deossa made 20 appearances in the league last season, including eight starts, with the club qualifying for the Champions League with a fifth place finish.

It’s believed that West Ham and Southampton are both keen on adding Deossa to their ranks before the transfer window closes.

However, Olympiacos, Vasco da Gama, Club América, River Plate and Ipswich have all also made enquiries for the Colombian.

Real Betis are keen to offload the 26-year-old in a bid to remove his wages from their books, but he has yet to give the green light on a move away.

All of these clubs are waiting on the player to make a decision on his future, with it understood that Deossa is willing to remain in Spain in a bid to fight for a place in Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Time is running out for a deal to be concluded, with the transfer market into the final week ahead of the 1 September deadline.

Southampton fans believe that he has the potential to be a positive force in Tonda Eckert’s side, but have raised some concerns.

But some would be impressed by the Saints completing a move for the midfielder.

Southampton have been warned that the player may prefer his options elsewhere, perhaps indicating it is time to move onto other targets.

Southampton are currently bottom of the Championship table after two games, with minus one point to their name.

Eckert’s side will return to action this evening with a home clash against West Ham in the second round of the EFL Cup, which kicks off at 7.45pm.

Nelson Deossa deal will be tough to pull off for Southampton and West Ham

Deossa hasn’t been able to cement a regular starting role at Betis under Pellegrini, but convincing him to depart the Spanish side could still be tricky.

Pellegrini’s side have Champions League football on offer this year, and have spent this summer in a show of ambition to remain at that level long-term.

Southampton and West Ham will find it particularly difficult to persuade him to move when they have just Championship football to offer, with Ipswich now in the Premier League.

But the midfielder has the potential to be a solid option for either club, if they can get a deal over the line before the market closes next week.
