Southampton are targeting Elche centre-back David Affengruber, Daily Echo understands.

Affengruber, 25, is among several centre-backs being monitored as Saints look to strengthen. With Taylor Harwood-Bellis set to join Aston Villa, finding a replacement is a priority before the window shuts at 11pm tomorrow.

The defender made 36 La Liga appearances last season after arriving from Sturm Graz two years ago. He has also featured in all three of Elche’s league matches this campaign.

Affengruber is in the final year of his contract at the Spanish club, which could make a deal possible if Elche opt to cash in.

Saints signed German defender Keven Schlotterbeck from FC Augsburg last week. The 29-year-old impressed on debut in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Millwall at St Mary’s, but he was not brought in as a Harwood-Bellis replacement.
