Kuryu Matsuki has received his first senior Japan call-up after a strong start to the season with Southampton.
According to Daily Echo, the 23-year-old has been named in a 27-man Samurai Blue squad. Japan face Uruguay on Thursday, September 24 at 11.05am, then Venezuela and Ecuador, before either Panama or New Zealand on Monday, October 5 at 11.30am.
Earlier this month he came off the bench to set up a goal in the 3-1 win over Swansea City. He then struck his first of the season in the 4-1 victory against Bristol City last time out. He has been rotating with winger Tom Fellows.
Sport Republic signing Matsuki is one of the younger members of the squad, which also features several familiar names from English football. Crystal Palace duo Takehiro Tomiyasu and Daichi Kamada, Leeds United’s Ao Tanaka and Ipswich Town forward Daizen Maeda are also included.
Matsuki has 18 appearances for Japan’s under-23s, helping secure the Under-23 Asia Cup in 2024 after a third-place finish in 2022.
