It is very difficult to keep up with MLS transfer news because of the World Cup. However, the league is heating up, and if you are not paying attention to the moves your team is making, you could be surprised when clubs return to the field in July.
Many teams waived some players; others signed new ones. This time, we are here to discuss the second category. An MLS club has signed a player who has played in Austria and Germany. Just like Atlanta United, this player arrived to reinforce their defense.
Ok, I’ll stop playing. The club that recently made a signing is Sporting Kansas City.
Sporting KC acquires defender Emir Karic from Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz. The 29-year-old Bosnian international has signed a two-year contract through the 2027-28 season with a club option for 2028-29.
The former Austrian youth international recently switched to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina. Coincidentally, Karic earned his one international cap to date in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier vs. Austria.
According to the MLS club's official website, “We are excited to welcome Emir to Sporting Kansas City. Emir is a very experienced left back at a fantastic age who will be able to make an immediate impact on our roster.”
In the current season, Karic played 44 games at Sturm Graz, scoring 0 goals and delivering five assists.
Alongside his career, the 29-year-old left-back played 343 matches, scoring 7 goals and giving 21 assists.
David Lee, the club's president of soccer operations & general manager, said this about their new signing.
“With over 300 senior matches in his career, he has gained valuable experience in both the German Bundesliga and European competition.”
Adding, “He has good technical traits and excellent physical attributes that will fit into our team and style of play, while he has displayed his winning mentality by helping Sturm Graz win the title and also earned promotion with Darmstadt.”
As of today, with the international break due to the World Cup, Sporting Kansas City sits last in the Western Conference.
With this signing, the club aims to strengthen its defense and begin securing more victories to move up the standings.
