Spotify Camp Nou is UEFA’s favourite option to host 2029 Champions League final | OneFootball

In the next few years, Barcelona are hoping to end their long wait – which stretches back to 2015 – to win another Champions League title. With Hansi Flick at the helm and the likes of Anthony Gordon, Rodri and Joao Cancelo having been signed this summer, they will have an excellent shot at winning the competition, which will conclude on Spanish shores next June with the final taking place at Atletico Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Irrespective of whether Barcelona win the Champions League or not in the coming years, it looks like the trophy will be heading to Catalonia in 2029. Earlier in the summer, the club confirmed that they had launched a bid to host the final of the 2028-29 season, and MD have now reported that it is UEFA’s favoured venue for the match.

Barcelona’s candidacy, which is supported by the Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Spanish Government, is currently seen as the better option by UEFA, although the final decision will not be made by the governing body’s Executive Committee for another couple of weeks.

Spotify Camp Nou development should be completed by 2028

There are multiple reasons as to why the Spotify Camp Nou’s bid is currently ahead of Wembley, which is the other candidate for the 2028-29 Champions League final. UEFA is excited at the prospect of being able to have over 100,000 spectators in attendance, with the stadium’s capacity expected to be 104,800 once renovations are complete. Furthermore, Wembley has already hosted, and will continue to host, several high-profile UEFA matches in recent and upcoming times, such as the 2023-24 Champions League final and the semi-finals and final of Euro 2028.

Barcelona are still a couple of years away from completing the Espai Barca project, with a completion date of 2028 having been pencilled in, but the fact that the stadium is not yet finished will not be a hindrance to their chances of being awarded the 2028-29 Champions League. A decision will be made by UEFA’s Executive Committee on the 15th of September, so until then, there will be no official news on the matter.
