Thirty years after hosting the 1999 showpiece, when Manchester United beat Bayern, the Spotify Camp Nou is on the cusp of being confirmed as the 2029 Champions League final venue.

Barcelona’s stadium submitted its bid with the Spanish federation on 10 June, backed by the city council and the Generalitat. SPORT reports that Camp Nou is better placed than Wembley.

Wembley in London, scene of Barça’s first European Cup triumph, is also in contention. UEFA will decide at its executive committee meeting on 15 September in Thessaloniki, Greece. Wembley is already set to host the Euro 2028 final and both semi-finals.

UEFA has viewed the Barcelona proposal favourably, noting the planned 104,600 capacity and the city’s hotel stock and airport operations. Nearby airports in Reus, Lleida and Girona further strengthen the bid.

The revamped Camp Nou will exceed UEFA requirements, Category 4, natural grass and at least 70,000 seats. If awarded, it would be to a stadium still under construction, though even in a worst-case scenario it will be complete by June 2029. The bid is expressly contingent on UEFA homologation and approval.

Works planning outlines around 62,600 capacity in August 2026 with the first and second tiers open and the third advancing. The opening of the Third Lateral has slipped to late 2026 or early 2027, targeting 70,000 to 72,000, then the third-tier Tribuna and VIP areas could lift that to roughly 80,000 to 85,000, subject to licences. Spring 2027 aims to finish the third tier and pass 100,000, before roof installation in summer 2027 brings about four months without fans and a probable temporary move at the start of 2027/28, with Montjuïc a serious option.
