Two goals from Ross Sykes and one from Christian Burgess gave Union St Gilloise a 3-1 win over Charleroi at the Stade Joseph Marien on Sunday afternoon. The two English defenders helped the Brussels based side capitalise on others dropping points around them to go top of the league after nine matchdays. They are level on points with Gent, but with one more game won they sit top.
The game had been level at 1-1, with Parfait Guiagon levelling 10 minutes after former Accrington Stanley defender Sykes’ opener in the 17th minute. However, goals in the 45th from former Portsmouth man Burgess and another from Sykes in added time at the end of the first half were enough for Union to run out winners. Cameron Puertas added another two assists to his tally for the season, bringing the 25-year-old Swiss midfielder up to four.
For Charleroi, it has been a poor start to the season. After nine games they have only won one, against Kortrijk, with four draws and four defeats. They face RWDM next, a side who have only lost one of their previous five matches.
