Brazil’s state championships could be wound up as early as 2027, putting the Carioca at risk. According to Rede 98, the idea is being weighed for 2027 or 2028 if the country’s betting market does not change.
State competitions rely heavily on betting sponsors and rights deals. Vasco, who depend on the Carioca for guaranteed early-season income, would be directly affected.
A Provisional Measure signed by President Lula on 25 September ends the exploitation, offer, intermediation and advertising of fixed-odds betting. It also bans betting sponsorships and orders sites and apps offline from six October. The measure is in force, but needs Chamber and Senate approval within 120 days to become law.
In Rio, the 2026 edition carried the title Cariocão Superbet via a betting sponsor, revenue that underpinned the return of performance prizes. The champions could reach R$ 27 million in total earnings.
Flamengo won at the Maracanã, earning R$ 10 million, and Fluminense took R$ 1 million for the Taça Guanabara. Vasco were second in Group A with 11 points, then lost 2-1 on aggregate to Fluminense in the semi-finals.
Vasco still banked about R$ 13 million, combining a R$ 6.6 million participation fee and roughly R$ 6.5 million in bonuses. The run also secured a 2027 Copa do Brasil berth, so scrapping the Carioca would forfeit that income even if it freed early-season dates.
