Stefanos Tzimas has suffered a season-ending ACL rupture, a cruel setback just as he broke into Brighton’s Premier League side.

According to TheArgus.co.uk, the Greece under-21 striker suffered the injury in the recent home game against Aston Villa and will now undergo surgery.

Speaking at the training ground on Friday morning, head coach Fabian Hurzeler said Tzimas had already started rehab and that the club trust their medical team. He added they are quite convinced he can return as quickly as possible, and even in better shape.

Tzimas had endured fitness issues in the second half of last season while on loan at Nuremberg after signing for the Seagulls. The timing deepens the frustration given his first-team breakthrough.

Hurzeler said he hopes to see the forward back for pre-season next summer. His absence leaves Danny Welbeck as the only specialist senior centre-forward heading into a busy spell.
