After months of contract wrangling over Dayot Upamecano, further details of the agreement have now emerged – and they are positive from FC Bayern’s point of view. While the central defender’s new salary remains at the expected level, the Frenchman’s advisors had to accept noticeable concessions when it came to hand money
According to the Munich newspaper tz, Upamecano’s new annual salary will be an estimated 20 million euros gross, as expected. However, Bayern were able to get their way on one key point, according to the report. The player’s side had originally pushed for a one-off payment of 20 million euros. This demand could not be met, and instead a hand money of just over 16 million euros was agreed
What is particularly important for Munich is that the sum is not due in one go, but is spread over the term of the new contract and paid out in several instalments. This is precisely the model that FC Bayern had preferred from the outset in order to minimize financial risks – particularly with regard to possible transfer scenarios at a later date
In retrospect, this confirms that Bayern’s hard line has had an effect. In recent weeks, the hand money was considered to be the biggest sticking point in the negotiations. At times, the deal even threatened to collapse after deadlines had passed and the fronts were considered to have hardened
Things only turned around when the pressure on the player’s side was noticeably increased and Upamecano finally took action himself. The centre-back took responsibility and gave the club his personal commitment. The last outstanding points were subsequently clarified – including the thorny issue of the signing fee

The result is a clear success for FC Bayern. The club has secured the long-term commitment of its hugely important defender until 2030 without having to give in completely on the financial details. The fact that the signing fee demanded was significantly reduced and also stretched out strengthens the club’s own negotiating position and provides additional planning security
Externally, the extension sends out a strong signal: despite months of negotiations, public criticism and internal power struggles, Bayern ultimately settled key points in their favour. The official announcement of the contract extension is expected soon.
