A surprising departure could be on the horizon for FC Bayern just before the transfer window closes. After his strong loan stint at 1. FC Heidenheim, Arijon Ibrahimovic was actually considered a backup option behind Luis Diaz and was a regular part of the squad during preseason. Now, however, things could take a turn.

Recently, there were many indications that Arijon Ibrahimovic would be wearing the FC Bayern jersey next season. Just before the start of the Bundesliga season, Max Eberl confirmed that the 20-year-old’s situation has changed. Bayern’s sporting director made it clear that a departure cannot be ruled out should a suitable opportunity arise.

“Ari had a very good season in Heidenheim. We liked what we saw and how he’s developed,” Eberl explained at the press conference ahead of the match against VfB Stuttgart.

During preseason, Ibrahimovic was given the chance to earn a spot on the first team, but he was unable to fully convince the coaching staff: “He got a lot of playing time with us during preseason—but now we see that it could be difficult for him,” said Eberl.

As a result, the forward does not currently appear to have the prospect of regular playing time with the first team. For Bayern, another loan or even a permanent transfer could therefore be an option.

Eberl expressed the club’s stance quite openly: “That’s why we said: Okay, if it’s interesting for both sides, then something could happen.”

Interest from the Bundesliga

As reported by Sport1, the club is said to prefer a permanent transfer in the event of Ibrahimovic’s departure. A loan deal, on the other hand, is considered rather unlikely, as the Munich club would prefer to further improve its transfer balance.

A potential suitor for Ibrahimovic could come from the Bundesliga. According to Sky, Union Berlin and Werder Bremen are considering the 20-year-old. However, both clubs are said to prefer a loan deal.

Atalanta Bergamo is being mentioned as another concrete suitor. The Italian club would likely also be open to a permanent signing.

Bayern has no plans for a direct replacement

Should Ibrahimovic actually leave the club, however, a new offensive player would not necessarily be signed. Eberl has practically ruled out a direct replacement.

When asked whether Bayern would sign a new player if Ibrahimovic were to leave, the sporting director referred to his previous statements: “I’ve already said that there’s a 99 percent chance we won’t sign any new players.”

This paints a clear picture: Should Ibrahimovic leave FC Bayern, Kompany would, in all likelihood, continue working with the existing roster.

For the young attacking player, however, a new opportunity could open up in the short term. Just as the transfer window is about to close, Ibrahimovic has suddenly become a player the record champions are looking to sell.
