According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are reportedly in a transfer deadline day battle to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana before the 11pm cut-off.

The 21-year-old has impressed for the Ligue 1 club and forced his way into Belgium’s senior squad over the last two years. Interest has grown as the window neared its close, with links to Premier League sides and Europe, including Arsenal earlier this month.

Fofana began at KAA Gent, scoring four goals in 13 outings before a swift promotion to the first team. He then registered five goals and 10 assists in 64 appearances in all competitions.

Lyon won the race with a £15m deal in January 2024. Since then he has delivered 27 goal contributions in 84 appearances at the Groupama Stadium.

Internationally, he earned nine Belgium Under-21 caps before a senior debut as a late substitute in a 2-2 Nations League draw with Italy in October 2024. He has since added four more caps, scoring his first senior goal in a 6-0 win over Liechtenstein in September last year.
