Sunderland are in the market to find alternative options for Adil Aouchiche if he cannot move to Portsmouth before the window closes, according to the Northern Echo.
Aouchiche joined Sunderland from French side Lorient in the summer of 2023 but has failed to make his mark in the north east so far.
The Frenchman has started only three times for Sunderland this season and the club are prepared to offload him.
Portsmouth, who are fighting for their survival, are keen to bring in a player in midfield and have set their eyes on Aouchiche.
It has been suggested that Sunderland have agreed to loan out Aouchiche to John Mousinho’s side.
Portsmouth will only be able to complete the deal for Aouchiche though if they are able to free up a spot in their squad reserved for players who qualify for an elite work permit; they can only have four.
As such, the deal is in danger of collapsing.
Sunderland understand the need to move Aouchiche on and as such are in the process of seeing if there are other destinations to which he could head if the Fratton Park escape route is closed down.
