Sunderland can secure a significant financial boost with a strong finish to the Premier League season as they chase Europa League or Europa Conference League qualification.
According to Sunderland Echo, each league position is worth about £2.6m in merit payments, funds that could aid summer recruitment.
After Saturday's draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Black Cats host Manchester United next weekend, then visit Everton before ending against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, a side also pushing for Europe.
Based on current standings, merit payments span from £53.1m for first to £2.6m for 20th. Sunderland sit 12th at £23.8m, with nearby positions offering increments of roughly £2.6m apiece.
Clubs also receive equal-share distributions from broadcasting, with last season's domestic pot paying £29.8m per club and international rights providing £59.2m.
